Bjørn Erik Axelsen is a senior scientist who heads the Fish Capture Research Group at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway.  He has background as a fisheries biologist (PhD), and has worked primarily with fish abundance estimation using hydroacoustics and trawls. He has also worked with process studies, fish behavior and distribution/ migration dynamics using hydroacoustics and various fish sampling gear. He has been involved in international development projects in fisheries and impacts of petroleum activities on marine resources, and was seconded as an adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries in Angola in 2006-2008 and to Ministry of Petroleum in Angola in 2009-2010.
